How To Care For Your Motorcycle Parts

When it comes to motorcycle riding, just like any other type of vehicle, keeping your motorcycle in tip-top shape can help you save money and assist with staying safe on the road. Learning how to do a little maintenance by yourself every now and then can help prolong the life of your motorcycle parts.

Be sure to always follow your motorcycle manual for regular motorcycle maintenance.  Here are some of the most common areas you should be looking at when inspecting your motorcycle, as well as some general care tips for different motorcycle parts.

Motorcycle Parts Inspection Guide

Brakes

Always check your brakes before going on each ride. Make sure they are working properly and are in good order. You should replace brake fluid every one to two years because they absorb moisture over time and become less effective. Check your brake fluid level and see if it needs a replacement. Worn down brake pads should also be replaced.

Fuel

Make sure your fuel filter is unclogged and check your fuel lines. You will need to replace your fuel lines immediately for any signs of damage or cracking. Over time, fuel absorbs moisture and deposits it to the bottom of the fuel tank. When left for extended periods of time, it can clog up carburettors and stick up the injectors. Let your engine run for at least a few minutes every week letting the fuel flow through the system. This will ensure that no deposits build up.

Oil

The frequency of oil changing varies per motorcycle type and brand. But in general, it is recommended that you change your oil at least once a year. The motorcycle oil plays a vital part in keeping your internal motorcycle parts lubricated and prevents them from rubbing together.

Oil also carries carbon deposits and sludge away from the other parts into the oil filter. If you use your motorcycle on a regular basis, for long rides, or on dusty roads, you will need to change your oil more than once a year.

Tyres

When it comes to tyres,  always check the air pressure and look for any signs of damage. Use the correct amount of air pressure to avoid blowouts. A tyre gauge will let you know if your tyre is correctly inflated. Replace your tyres when needed.

Drive Chain

The drive chain transfers the power from the transmission to your rear wheel so it's essential to keep it in good condition. Without proper care, it can break or snap whilst moving at high speed. Make sure the chains are lubricated and cleaned regularly. After each ride, lube your chain whilst it is still warm to allow the oil to penetrate deeply into parts of the chain.

Air Filter

Keep your engine filled with fresh air. A clogged air filter can badly affect the performance of your motorcycle so you need to clean it regularly, especially after a really dirty off-road ride. Check your manual to know what type of air filter your motorcycle has and the instructions on how to properly remove it.

Battery

Keep your battery fully charged when not in use. This will help extend the life of your battery. Make sure the top of the battery is free of grime. Check the wirings for any damage or loose connections. Getting stuck with a flat battery is never fun so it’s always worth investing in a decent battery.

If you are not confident about caring for your motorcycle or concerned about your bike not being mechanically sound, always contact a professional mechanic for advice.
