Helmets are the most important part of any style of riding and Adventure Riding is no different. Along with your other must-have riding gear such as jackets, pants, and boots. An adventure helmet is a mix between road and motocross helmets, which is perfect because you can expect to encounter all kinds of terrain on an adventure and you want to be wearing a helmet that can provide safety and comfort in all conditions. Adventure helmets are typically shaped like a motocross helmet, with a road helmet visor attached. Picking a helmet for your next adventure can be tricky, so we’ve made a list that separates an Adventure Helmet from the rest in hopes to make purchasing your next helmet a little easier.
A Helmet peak refers to the plastic brim located at the top of the helmet, right above the goggle port. The primary purpose of the peak is to deflect rocks, dirt, sand, water etc. The peak is essential when riding behind others as it is a common occurrence for roost to be thrown up by riders in front of you.
Visors are designed to protect the face against elements, including heat, wind, rain and any other weather condition you’ll encounter. Some adventure riders prefer a visor over goggles as it provides a certain amount of comfort as it’s not on your face like goggles are. This is completely personal preference and you can take off your visor and use goggles if you prefer as well.
A pinlock is an anti fog device that is commonly found in adventure helmets. The pinlock creates a sealed chamber between itself and the inside of your visor. This pocket of air insulates your shield against the different outdoor temperatures and reduces condensation and fog, which is good when riding in forestry or somewhere with increased levels of humidity (Australia).
The MIPS system is basically a liner inside the shell that can move and rotate to absorb impact, it's basically suspension for your head. It provides impact protection that prevents concussions in case of a crash. This feature would be a good helmet feature for someone who is getting into adventure riding. Bell has a reasonable price point, and safety features and is a really solid helmet which makes it a very reputable brand.
So here’s a summary of some components that you’ll find with your adventure helmet, other things to look for are the materials used to create the outer shell as well as weight of the helmet overall as these can directly affect the comfort level of the helmet you’ll be wearing and if you’re planning to go on a long adventure - comfort is paramount.
