Adventure Motorcycle Riding is motorcycle riding in its purest form. Often associated with big motorcycles, adventure riding, simply means venturing into the unknown on two wheels. Adventure or ADV riding usually involves extended trips to adventurous, off-road locations. Whether it’s riding on challenging terrains, powering through rainy weather or a scorching sunny day, adventure riding means braving through whatever the universe throws at your way and enjoying every bit of the journey. Adventure riding brings unique experiences to riders.
There’s a lot to think about when adventure riding but getting a grasp of the fundamentals will lay down the groundwork for the rest of your on and off-road riding experience. So we thought we’d put everything you need to know in one spot before you start trekking off into your own adventure!
Whether you’re on the latest and greatest BMW or a classic DR650, making you’re your motorcycle is up to the task that is tackling any terrain you throw at it is the main fundamental when Adventure Riding.
The best way to choose what motorcycle you’ll need is to firstly figure out what type of terrain/riding you’re going to be doing. If you’re diving into trickier trails and travelling shorter distances a smaller displacement bike that is easy to manoeuvre and pick up in the result of a crash/tip over might be the best way to go.
Whereas if you’re tackling on thousand + Kilometre trips on the road, you’ll more than likely want a bigger bike that has a bigger engine that can hold more fuel. For one, these guys are usually more comfortable to ride as well as being purpose built for this exact type of riding, they’ll sit at a higher speed more comfortably and usually have a comfier seat so you don’t get the treacherous ‘monkey butt’
Luggage and how you carry your luggage is one of the most important parts of Adventure Riding. Whether your hours or days away from home, there’s essential items that you’ll need to bring with you and having a good luggage set up is extremely important to make sure that everything you need on your Adventure is safe and secure.
You’ll typically want a good set of Saddle Bags, Rear bag and Tank bag. Think of your Luggage set-up as your home away from home, so you’ll need to pack Camping equipment, food & water and any tools, tool kits & spare parts you may need depending on how long your trip is.
On an Adventure, you’ll be exposed to all types of the elements. Because of this its extremely essential Adventure Riders have the correct gear to make sure they are protected. Gear that tackles the weather as well as protects you in case of a crash is an absolute necessity. Navigating what gear to buy can be tricky, so here’s a set list that we think is absolutely necessary before you head off on your trip.
First and foremost, every type of rider and any type of riding needs a helmet. Adventure helmets are specifically made for this style of riding, taking the best of a motocross helmet and the best of a road helmet and combining them together to make sure your brain bucket is the comfiest it can be for long trips.
A huge part of Adventure riding is the Jacket and Pants, these guys are designed to tackle any kind of weather event whilst still giving you huge amounts of protection in case of a crash. They’ll have thermal liners for those cold mornings and vented pockets on those days that the sun is beating down on you as well as CE Certified armour.
Adventure Boots are like any other piece of ADV equipment. They combine both Motocross and Road boots together to make sure you can get through you’re adventure safe and comfy. They’ll typically be as tall as motocross boots to make sure no nasty branches, sticks or roost attacks your lower leg, but be lighter than a full on motocross boot to make sure they’re comfier and easier to walk in – they’ll typically be lined with water proof linings to keep your feet dry also.
